Huambara (Altazorian, full name "San Luís de Huambara", Ingerish "Saint Louis of Huambara") is an important city in the Departamento del Sur in the Ardisphere. It is located at the head of the Río del Au delta, where the three main distributaries of the river delta diverge, at the southeasternmost extent of the capital metropolitan area centered on Villa Contitución, DF, 60 km to the northwest. It is the seat of the Comuna de la Delta and the 3rd largest city in the Departamento del Sur. Although historically quite old, with evidence of urbanization among pre-colonial peoples dating back almost 2000 years, for most of its modern history it was a dusty agricultural town. However, in the most recent 30 years the city's population has exploded as the metropolitan area's effective boundaries have expanded to include the city. It is thus one of the "youngest" large cities in the Ardisphere.
Huambara's current population is about 200,000 inhabitants, in a land area of 50.9 km2, for a density of 3929 persons per km2.
Name
The name Huambara derives from the Altazorian language or the related Albalongan language, and means "group of acacia trees". During the colonial period the place was named San Luís by the Castellanese, while the modern name reverted to the native name.
Geography
The city forms the heart of the Au Delta region.
